National Cross Country Championships - Saturday 23rd February 2013 - Herrington Country Park
The cold but dry conditions that greeted volunteers who set out the course on Thursday and Friday were replaced on race day, by an inch or so of snow and occasional snow flurries throughout the day. Even Penshaw Monument was hard to spot on the morning as runners started to congregate and warm up on the course. Unfortunately, Sunderland Harriers long wait for a National champion will need to continue as despite a gallant effort by Eritrean International, Weynay Ghebresilasie, to add the National Junior title to his Northern title, he eventually finished in third in 34'34, and was clearly disappointed with his effort. Oliver James had a superb run to finish in 20th position with 35'55 in the Junior race over the 10k coourse, which was now extremely muddy.
In the Senior Women's race, the club were led home by Michelle Avery in 126th with 37'42, with Helen Higgins finishing 288th in 44'26 and Susan Clughen 370th with 49'50. Penshaw Hill Race - Wednesday 13th June 2012
Brian Rushworth made it 18 wins out of 22 Penshaw races, when he managed to hold off a determined challenge by former winner Nick Swinburn from Morpeth Harriers. Nick won the prime competition to be first to the monument on the opening lap but then took a wrong turning on the descent, which meant Brian and Nathan Reed took turns at leading the race. Brian eventually dropped Nathan on the last lap and thought he was consolidating second place as he turned fro the final climb up the hill. Hearing shouts from the crowd, Brian turned to see that he was infact ahead of Nick, who was closing rapidly. Brian summoned enough strength to make one last big effort to hold off Nick to win by 3 seconds in 16'54. Nathan hung on to finish third in 17'20 with Craig Isherwood 4th in 17'38. Tim Field was 5th in 18'12, Michael Barker was 6th in 18'21, Paul Merrison was 1st Over 50 , finishing 8th overall in 18'45, with Paul Redman being the seventh Harrier to finish in the Top Ten finishing in 10th with 19'01. The fifth and penultimate Harrier league cross country event was held on a testing course at The Pastures, Alnwick. Despite the valiant efforts of Mark Hood and Craig Isherwood, who both finished in the top twenty from the fast and medium packs respectively, the club could only finish 8th team on the day. Better news however, for the Under 15 Girls who sealed the title with one race remaining. This is the fastest time on the albert park course and also the fastest time ran by a Harrier at any parkrun, and demonstrates that Gavin is getting into good shape for the forthcoming relays. Now 15'07 on the hillier Sunderland parkrun course would be really impressive! As it is Gavin, must have spent most of the last lap of the 2.5 lap course course lapping people, which probably stopped a sub 15 minute time.
