Welcome to Sunderland Harriers & AC Web Site. Sunderland Harriers was formed in 1897 (re-formed 1905) and over the past century have promoted athletics in the North East of England. During this time the club has achieved success at national level at road running and cross-country over a wide range of age groups.

The Annual General Meeting was held in the Board Room, Monkwearmouth Hospital on Monday 3rd October at 19.15. Thank you to all those who attended.

Sunderland Harriers have qualified for the Clubmark Accreditation Scheme. We received the certificate from Emma Williams of England Athletics on Thursday 15th September 2011.
North Eastern County Championships - Saturday 12th/Sunday 13th May 2012 - Gateshead
The club had 3 Gold medallists with Danielle Elliott winning the Under 15 Girls 3000m on Saturday in 11'19.81, Michael Wilson winning the Under 17 Men 800m in 1'58.54 on Sunday and Hollie Lancaster winning the Under 15 Girls 100m on Sunday in 13.04. Hollie also won a silver medal on Saturday in the 200m with a time of 26.63. Logan Powell also won silver medals on both days in the Under 15 Boys sprints, running 11.93 for 100m on Saturday and 24.84 for 200m on Sunday. Joseph Gaffney won silver in the Under 15 BOys High Jump with 1.50m on Saturday. Alix Waites won silver on Sunday in the Under 17 Womens 300m in 42.86. Patrick Crombie won silver in the Under 20 Mens 5000m on Sunday in 17'01.31. Bronze medals were won by Jack Robinson in the Under 15 Boys 300m with 42.18 on the Saturday and Joel Jones running 9'45.74 in the Under 17 Mens 3000m on Sunday. Samantha Mckenzie won a bronze on Sunday in the Under 20 Womens 100m race in 13.41. Joseph Gaffney won a bronze medal in the Under 15 Boys Shot Putt on Saturday with 8.27m.
Marathon of the North and Sunderland City 10k - Sunday 6th May 2012
Paul Redman finished 6th in the Red Spotted Hanky sponsored Marathon in a time of 2'54'40. In the 10k race, Kevin Calvert finished 4th in 33'04. Brian Rushworth was 5th in 34'16. Craig Isherwood was 10th in 35'22, Jonathan Dobson was 10th in 36'18 and Steven Graham was 13th in 36'34. Michelle Holt finished 40th (3rd female) in 39'53. Ingrid Hope was 79th (9th female and first F50) in 42'30 and Rachael Moore was 183rd (22nd female) in 46'44. Joel Jones finished 2nd in the Junior 3k race held on Saturday.
Terry O'Gara 5k race - Sunday 22nd April 2012
Craig Isherwood finished 14th in 17'08, with Paul Merrison 20th and 2nd M50 in 17'21. Alan Hodgson was 28th in 17'54. Dean Phillips was 69th in 19'56 and Len Christopher 126th in 23'08.
Presentation Night - Wednesday 18th April 2012 at the Pullman Lodge, Seaburn
Thank you to all those who attended the club presentation night/social evening at the Pullman Lodge, and congratulations to members of the Under 15 girls team, Danielle Elliott, Alex Pearson, Anna Robinson and Meriel Smithson who won the North East Harrier league Cross Country title. The Club's senior Cross Country Grand Prix was won by Alan Hodgson, with Fred Judson 2nd, Dave Savage 3rd, Dean Phillips 4th and Paul Redman 5th. And well done to all those athletes who participated in the two line dances!
The track season has started
The North East Track and Field Championships are to be held at Gateshead Stadium on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th May 2012. Prior to this there are several other track meetings which could be used as preparation, with Middlesbrough and Shildon already held on the 15th April and 22nd April and Gateshead on 29th April. The North East Track and Field league also started on Wednesday 25th April. Several members of the club have already set pb's in these early season races.
Elswick Good Friday Relay Races
Sunderland Harriers finished second team in the Senior Mens race in a time of 44'36. Kevin Calvert running 10'42 on the first leg to bring the club back in third place. Oliver James took the club into a temporary lead on the second leg. The Veteran Mens team ffinished fifth overall but won their age group in a time of 46'09, with Brian Rushworth clocking 11'03 on the third leg to take the team into the lead. Weekend Roundup - Saturday 31st March and Sunday 1st April 2012
Kevin Calvert finished second in the Hartlepool Marina 5 mile road race on Sunday in 25'39. Peter Richardson was second M60 finishing 65th overall in 32'19. At Blyth, Ingrid Hope won the Women's Over 50 category with 42'19, finishing 126th overall and ninth female. Paul Besford finished 9th and third Over 40 in 34'19. Both races had the benefit of a tailwind until the turning point and then a strong headwind back to the finish.
Start Fitness North East Harrier League - Prudhoe - Saturday 24th March 2012
After consistent performances, by Danielle Elliott, Anna Robinson, Alex Pearson and Meriel Smithson, throughout the Cross Country Season the Under 15 Girls won the Team Grand Prix at Prudhoe after finishing second team on the day. The Senior Men despite having Nathan Reed finish 4th from the slow pack, could only finish 11th team on the day. In the Under 11's race, Owen Jackson finished 5th. VAANE Cross Country Championships - Saturday 17th March 2012
On a twisting course last used for a Harrier League Cross Country event some fifteen years ago, Ingrid Hope successfully retained her Over 50 Women's title when finishing fourth overall. Brian Rushworth regained his Senior Men's title after missing last years race through injury. This was Brian's 9th victory in 10 years.
Indoor Track Meeting - Gateshead - Thursday 15th March 2012
Logan Powell won the Under 15 Boys 60m race in a Grade 2 time of 7.5 seconds. Anthony Barnes finished second in the Under 20 mens race with 7.4. Samantha McKenzie won the Under 20 Womens race in 8.2. Veterans, Graham Lee ran 8.3 and Steve Scott ran 9.0 in their 60m race.
Club Cross Country Grand Prix
After the penultimate Harrier league at Alnwick and National Cross Country race at Parliament Hills, London, there is still a close battle at the top of the club grand prix. Alan Hodgson currently leads with 63 points, followed by Fred Judson on 59 points, with Dean Phillips and David Savage both on 54 points and Paul Redman on 45 points. Leading Senior runner Craig Isherwood has 39 points. Michelle Holt is the leading woman on 26 points. Alan Hodgson, Craig Isherwood, Dean Phillips and David Savage are pictured below. The final race in the series will be held at Prudhoe on Saturday 24th March.
Start Fitness North East Harrier League - Saturday 3rd March 2012 - Alnwick
The fifth and penultimate Harrier league cross country event was held on a testing course at The Pastures, Alnwick. Any slim chance Sunderland Harriers had of winning the Senior Mens trophy was surely finished by rival clubs fielding very strong teams. Despite the valiant efforts of Mark Hood and Craig Isherwood, who both finished in the top twenty from the fast and medium packs respectively, the club could only finish 8th team on the day. Better news however, for the Under 15 Girls who sealed the title with one race remaining. Despite only finishing third team on the day, their previous performances where they have finished teams in every race, ensure they cannot be caught. So congratulations to Danielle Elliot, Alex Pearson, Anna Robinson and Meriel Smithson. Owen Jackson finished fourth in the Under 11's race and Patrick Crombie finished third in the Under 17 Mens race.
North East Counties Indoor Track & Field Championships - Sunday 26th February 2012
Hollie Lancaster won gold in the Under 15 Girls 60m in a pb of 8.18 seconds. Amanda Edwards finished second in the Veteran Womens event with Sandra Jackson third. Both Amanda and Sandra won gold medals in their respective age groups. In the Veteran Mens event, Graham Lee finished third.
National Cross Country Championships - Parliament Hill, London - Saturday 25th February 2012
In the Senior Mens race Craig Isherwood finished 401st, Alan Hodgson was 687th, David Savage was 1221st, Fred Judson was 1261st and Dean Phillips was 1424th. Former Sunderland Harriers, Patrick and Jack Martin, finished 10th and 40th respectively for their new club Stockport Harriers and were both part of their bronze medal team. In the Under 17 Mens race, Michael Wilson finished 173rd. In the Under 15 Boys race, Joel Jones finished 96th, Ben Craig 221st and James McAnaney 258th.
Royal Signals Relays
At a very cold and windy Hetton Lyons Park, the Senior Men finished 6th, with Kevin Calvert running 11'08 on the first leg over 2.22 miles. In the B team, Patrick Crombie and Michael Wilson made their Senior Men debut. The Senior Women finished 11th, with Michelle Holt running 13'45 on the first leg, and Amy Coulson making her Senior Women debut. The Over 50 Veterans Men team won their event, eventually finishing 26th overall and fourth veteran team.
Club Cross Country Grand Prix
With 2 Harrier league races and the National Cross Country race still to come, there is a close battle at the top of the club grand prix. Alan Hodgson currently leads with 44 points, followed by Fred Judson and Paul Redman on 40 points and Dean Phillips and David Savage on 35 points. Leading Senior runner Kevin Calvert is tied on 27 points with leading junior Oliver James. Michelle Holt is the leading woman on 22 points. Club Events
Entries are already being received for the Penshaw Hill race on Wednesday 13th June and the Club 5k race on Wednesday 18th July. The Penshaw race is one of the toughest three mile races in the North East with a very testing climb at the start and also at the finish next to the Monument. The 5k road race at Silksworth is on one of the fastest 5k courses in the country and starts with a very fast downhill descent towards the footpath behind Plains Farm before passing the fishing lake at Silksworth and then returning along the Plains Farm footpath to run around the larger lake at Silksworth before a downhill descent takes you back to the finish line behind the Sainsbury's store. The Farringdon Relays Cross Country race will be held on Saturday 8th September around an undulating course at Farringdon/Gilley Law.
Coaching
The club is pleased to announce that George Harden successfully completed the Coaching Children's course. The course is still being piloted by UK Athletics and George is one of the first people in the country to undertake this new course. This award improves on the Coaching Assistants award George achieved last year.
Start Fitness North East Harrier League - Wrekenton - Saturday 11th February 2012
The club had a successful day in the Senior Men and Under 15 Girls race. On the frost bound course at Wrekenton Craig Isherwood led the men home in 5th place. Oliver James was the fastest Harrier finishing 8th from the medium pack. In the Under 15 Girls race Meriel Smithson finished 3rd from the slow pack with Danielle Elliot finishing 7th from the fast pack. Further results are on the cross country page..
Run England training groups
There are three Run England training groups set up by Sunderland Harriers to help people get fit, active and participate in the sport. They are all held on Thursday nights. The SeafRUNt Smilers meet at the Seaburn Centre at 6.15pm and is led by David Savage. The Happyfeet Striders meet at the Silksworth Ski Complex at 6.30pm and is led by Eddie Maddison and Glenn Forster. The Castle View running fitness group meet at the Billy Hardy Centre at 6pm and is led by Michael Hill. Northern Cross Country Championships - Pontefract - Saturday 28th January 2012
Joel Jones was the highest placed Sunderland Harrier when finishing 12th in the Under 15 Boys race. The Under 15 Girls finished 12th team, with Danielle Elliott finishing in 50th place. Amy Coulson was 25th in the Under 17 Women's race and Michelle Holt was 35th in the Senior Women's event. More details are on the cross country page.
Durham Cathedral XC relays - Sunday 22nd January 2012
The Over 45 veterans team finished second in the Veteran team event, held in very windy conditions in Durham. Brian Bewick brought the club home first on the first leg in 10'13, with Brian Rushworth increasing the lead on the second leg with 10'00. Paul Merrison (10'41) was unable to hold off Iain Twaddle, North Shields Poly, on the final leg. Iain ran the quickest Vets. time of 9'39. The B team finished 9th through Paul Redman 10'49, Paul Collins 11'06 and Graham Lancaster 10'59. The C team finished just behind through George Harden 11'14, Alan Hodgson 11'06 and Steven Graham 10'38. The E team finished 31st with Kevin Carraher 12'07, Fred Judson 12'44 and Vince Emmett 12'58. The D team finished 35th with Peter Richardson 12'36, Bill Bittlestone 12'46 and Jimmy Wightman 13'00. The F team finished 37th with David Savage 12'42, Dean Phillips 12'46 and Len Christopher 13'18. The Senior Men finished 18th with Nathan Reed running 10'08, Alan Hodgson with his second race of the day ran 11'06 again before Craig Isherwood, with his third race in 8 days ran 10'08.
Northern Indoor Track and Field Championships - Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th January 2012
Hollie Lancaster had an excellent series of races to qualify for the Under 15 Girls 60m where she eventually finished fourth in the final in a time of 8.23seconds. A new pb by one hundredth of a second.
Hartlepool Old Monks Race - Sunday 8th January 2012
Brian Rushworth made a welcome and winning return to racing when winning the 5.5mile (approx.) multi-terrain race in 30'57. Paul Redam was 6th, Craig Isherwood was 8th and Steven Graham 10th. Michelle Holt won the Womens race when finishing 24th overall in 36'40.
Morpeth 11k Race - New Years Day
Michelle Holt started the New Year in fine form and was a clear winner of the womens race on New Years Day in Morpeth.
Cross Country Championships
Sunderland Harriers failed to win any medals at the North East Cross Country Championships held on Saturday 10th December at East Cramlington. Former club members Patrick and Jack Martin finished second and third respectively in the Senior Mens event, competing in the colours of their new club Stockport Harriers. The Northern Championships will be held on Saturday 28th January 2012 at Pontefract Park, Wakefield. Entries are being taken, so let your coach know if you wish to compete. A minibus has been booked, with the younger age groups having first option. The National Cross Championships will be held at Parliament Hill, London on Saturday 25th February. Again entries are being taken.

Michael Wilson won the Under 17 Men's race from the slow pack, whilst team mate Patrick Crombie finished 6th from the fast pack. Alex Pearson finished 6th from the slow pack in the Under 15 girls race. Amy Coulson was 6th in the Under 17 girls race, and Kevin Calvert also finished 6th in the Senior mens race, when running from the fast pack. Oliver James finished 3rd from the slow pack. The Under 15 girls currently lead the team event.
60th Brampton - Carlisle 10 mile - Saturday 19th November 2011
Steven Potts was first to finish from the club in 25th place with 57'02. Paul Redman ran 58'46 to finish 37th (4th Over 45), Tom Campion was 75th (5th Over 50) in 61'40 with Michelle Holt finishing 76th (6th Woman) in 61'42. Sunderland Harriers finished third overall. The under 13 boys were 7th, the under 15 boy 5th, the under 17 men 3rd and the senior men 3rd. The Start Fitness North East Harrier League Cross Country 2011/12 season started at East Cramlington, on Saturday 8th October 2011. Sunderland Harriers had Alison Seadon finish 1st Under 20 in 27'17, with Amy Coulson 3rd Under 17 in 28'43. Paul Merrison finished 7th in the Senior Mens race in 35'32. With the next counter finishing 67th the club could only finish 8th team on the day and 7th in Division one. Further details are available on the Cross Country page.
Annual General Meeting - Monday 3rd October 2011
There was a large turnout of members at the Annual General Meeting held at Monkwearmouth Hospital. Special mention goes to Paul Redman for all his work in helping the club achieve Clubmark status, and to Steven Duffy for the initiatives he has introduced in the last year. Merit awards were given to Laura Hand, Hollie Lancaster and Alix Waites for the girls and to Joe Gaffney, Oliver James, Logan Powell and Michael Wilson for the Boys. Congratulations go to Patrick Martin who has had another excellent year. Patrick and Jack Martin who both live near to Manchester have decided to join a club nearer to where they live. They will both be sorely missed by the club. Our best wishes go to both athletes and may they have continued success.
Sherwoods Chevrolet Darlington 10k - Sunday 14th August 2011
Mark Hood continued his steady return to form by finishing second in a quick 30'48. Steven Duffy set a pb finishing 11th in 33'52. Paul Redman set his fourth consecutive pb and his third 10k pb in less than a month when finishing 20th in 35'06. Paul was first M45. Steven Gordon set a pb of 37'27 finishing 45th ahead of teammate Alan Hodgson who was 51st in 37'38. Michelle Holt was fourth female and 72nd overall in 38'52. Ingrid Hope was 7th female and first F50 when finishing 117th overall in 40'45.
Fred Judson was 163rd in 42'24, ahead of 2nd M60, Bill Bittlestone in 42'42 (175th overall). Vince Emmett was 292nd in 46'00 and Rachael Moore was 393rd overall in 48'27. The Men finished 2nd team in the 3 to count competition and the women also finished second team. Boys coach, John Archer ran 44'21 to finish 242nd.
Morpeth 10k - Tuesday 2nd August 2011
Paul Besford finished seventh overall and second Veteran when recording 34'40 at the Morpeth 10k. Paul Redman continued his excellent run of form by setting a new pb for 10k of 35'19 when finishing eleventh overall and first Over 45. This took 14 seconds from his previous pb which he set last month at the Gateshead 10k, and comes only 2 weeks after setting a pb of 16'49 at the Sunderland 5k race. Sean Smith was 26th in 37'12.
North East Track & Field - Gateshead - Wednesday 27th July 2011
Hollie Lancaster finished second in the Under 15 Girls 100m and 200m races in 13.04 and 26.79 respectively. Hollie lost by one hundredth of a second in both races to Stephanie Addison from the host club. Logan Powell was third in the Under 15 Boys 100m (12.62) and 200m (25.77) races. Desta Ross was 2nd in the Under 17 Boys 100m (12.32) and 3rd in the 200m (25.05). Danielle Elliott ran 5'47.64 in the Under 15 girls 1500m. Ella Barnes recorded 3.50m in the Under 15 girls Long Jump and 1.20m in the High Jump. Hollie travelled to Leigh on Saturday 30th July to take part at a Northern Athletics meeting. Hollie was 3rd in the 200m in 26.42 seconds and was part of a winning North East relay team in the Under 15 Girls 4 * 100m.

Paul Besford was 8th in 16'38. Alan Hodgson was 25th in 18'07, John Watson was 54th (2nd M55) in 19'35 and Susan Clughen was 150th ("nd F55) in 25'55.
Sunderland 5k road race - Wednesday 20th July 2011
Mark Hood narrowly failed to win after a race long battle with 5 Morpeth Harriers, eventually finishing second behind Nick Swinburn in 14'39. Brian Rushworth finished 13th and first M45 in 15'56. John Watson was first M55 in 19'27 and Michelle Holt was 7th female in 18'29.
BMC Races - Monkton Stadium - Monday 18th July 2011
Michael Wilson won the 1500m B race in a new personal best time of 4'15.8. In the A race, Patrick Martin, finished third in 3'58.4.
Great North 10k
This year the Great North 10k changed venue from Sunderland to Gateshead. Steven Duffy was first Harrier home in 12th position in a time of 34'48. Paul Redman was 14th Male (first Over 45) in 35'33, Rob Sloan finished 22nd Male in 36'41 with Steven Graham finishing 27th Male in 37'06.
Michelle Holt finished 51st overall but fourth female in 38'23. Kathryn Watt was 86th female in 49'02 and Susan Clughen was 256th female (7th in her age group) with 53'36.
Alan Hodgson was 49th male in 38'48, David Savage was 151st overall in 42'09, John Watson was first M55 in 40'53, David White was 2nd M60 in 44'55.
Start Fitness North East Track and Field - Gateshead 13th July 2011
Hollie Lancaster won the Under 15 Girls 200m in a new personal best time of 26.3 seconds. Michael Wilson was also fastest Under 17 Boy over 800m when competing in the Open seeded race. Michael set a new pb of 1'58.0 .
In the Under 13 Girls 200m race, Laura Hand finished 3rd in 30.7 seconds. Laura was fourth in the 800m race in 2'47.1. In the Under 15 Girls events, Ella Barnes jumped in 3.73m in the Long Jump and 1.15m in the High Jump. Danielle Elliott ran 2'53.7 in the 800m
In the Under 13 Boys 200m, James Drinkald ran 31.7 seconds. In the Under 15 Boys 800m race, Luca Irvine ran 2.'17.5 and Joel Jones ran 2'22.7. In the 200m, Logan Powell finished third with 25.5 seconds. In the Under 17 Mens race Anthony Barnes was second in the 100m in 11.7 seconds. Desta Ross was fourth fastest with 12.2 seconds and was fifth fastest over 200m in 25.2 seconds. In the Senior Mens race, George Harden ran 2'15.4 in the 800m.
Sunderland 10k
In the Sunderland 10k road race, hosted by Redspottedhanky, Michelle Holt finished third woman in 39'47. Ingrid Hope was 6th (first Over50) in 43'00.
In the mens race the club was led home by Kevin Calvert in 5th (36'01), Steven Duffy was 6th (36'21), Paul Redman was 7th (1st Over 45) in 36'27, Paul Collins was 9th (1st Over 50) in 37'24, Graham Lancaster was 14th in 38'44, Steven Gordon was 15th in 38'44, Tom Campion was 20th (2nd Over 50 in 39'45) and Alan Hodgson was 22nd in 39'46.
Luca Irvine was third in the Junior race over 3k. The Harriers won the combined team competition.
British Masters Track & Field Championships
Dennis Field had a remarkable weekend winning three gold and two bronze medals in the Over 80 category at the British Masters Championships. His gold medals came in the Triple Jump (5.57m), Discus (21.84m) and Javelin (21.28m) In the triple jump, Dennis set a new british record..
The two bronze medals came in the Hammer (22.18m) and Weight (8.29m).
Tim Field did not perform as successfully as his dad, Dennis, but still came away with a bronze medal in the Over 45 1500m race.
North East Athletics League - Wednesday 22nd June 2011
In the Under 13 Boys, Nassim Heraoua was second in 14.8 seconds for 100m. Luke Phillips had his first track race running 5'37.9 for 1500m. In the Under 15 Girls Hollie Lancaster won the 100m in 12.9 seconds. Ella Barnes was second in the discus with 15.19m
In the Under 15 Boys Logan Powell was second in the 100m with 12.5 seconds. Anthony Barnes won his seeded race over 100 metres and was fifth fastest in his Under 17 age group with 12.1 seconds.
In the Junior Womens 100m race, Sam Mckenzie won in 13.3 seconds. Graham Lee ran 13.0 in the Senior Mens 100m race and George Harden ran 4'55.7 in the Senior Mens mile race.
Blaydon Races - Thursday 9th June 2011
Mark Hood was first Harrier to finish in a time of 30'35 for the 5.9 mile course. Mark finished 13th overall. Paul Besford led the gadgies team to second place in the team competition, when finishing 31st (3rd V40) in 32'07. Paul Redman was 49th (4th V45) in 33'27. Paul Collins was 54th (1st V50) in 33'37 and Jonathan Dobson was the final team counter in 62nd (6th V45) in 33'55.
Michelle Holt finished 198th overall in 38'12 with Hayley Reed finishing 230th in 38'46.
Damien Weston finished 113th in 35'54. Alan Hodgson was 129th in 36'14. David Savage was 307th in 39'47. Bill Bittlestone was 462nd (10th V60) in 41'33 and Dean Phillips was 500th in 41'56.
BUPA Great Manchester 10k - Sunday 15th May 2011
Patrick Martin had a brilliant run on his birthday to record an official PB of 29'41 when finishing in 16th position. Patrick improved his pb by one second, but believes the time on the clock in the previous race at Partington in March this year was actually three seconds faster than the time he was given. Definitely running a pb was Patrick's younger brother, Jack, who took a whopping 42 seconds of his previous best time set only 3 weeks ago at the Salford 10k race. Jack ran 30'09 to finish 28th overall. Steven Duffy continued his return to racing from injury, following on from the Lambton 5k run last week where he fell when leading, by finishing 97th in a time of 34'57.
NECAA Track & Field Championships - Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th May 2011
Well done to all the Harriers who participated at the North East Championships. Luca Irvine finished 6th in the Under 15 Boys 1500m final with 4'48.31. Patrick Crombie was 9th in the Under 17 event in 4'50.84 and Oliver James finished third in the Under 20 event with 4'14.60. Laura Hand ran 2'47.84 in the Under 13 Girls 800m heat and 32.65 seconds in the 200m final. Hollie Lancaster ran 26.96 to finish second in the Under 15 Girls 200m final. Callum Todd ran 14.65 in the Under 13 Boys 100m final to finish 6th. Anthony Barnes finished fourth in the Under 17 final with 11.83. Graham Lee ran a pb of 12.86 in the Senior Mens event. All the above events took place on the Saturday.
On the Sunday, Jack Robinson ran 2'41.93 in the Under 15 Boys 800m heats. Michael Wilson ran 2'00.91 to finish fourth in the Under 17 Boys 800m. Jake Archer ran 2'00.38 in the Under 20 heats. Alix Waites finished second in the Under 17 Womens 300m race with 43.55. Hollie Lancaster collected another silver medal when finishing second in the Under 15 Girls 100m race in 13.14. Samantha McKenzie ran 13.4 to finish 5th in the Under 20 Womens event. Callum Todd finished fourth in the Under 13 Boys 200m race with 30.36. Anthony Barnes was 6th in the Under 17 Mens final with 24.78. Joseph Gaffney finished second in the Under 13 Boys Shot Putt with 7.73m. Hollie Lancaster jumped 4.29m in the Under 15 Girls Long Jump to finish 6th and Ella Barnes jumped 3.84m. Callum Todd jumped 4.34m to finish third in the Under 13 Boys event.
Clive Cookson 10k - Wednesday 11th May 2011
Paul Besford defied the windy conditions and Guy Bracken from the host club to win the 10k race in a time of 34'16. Kevin Calvert finished in 4th place with 35'21 just ahead of Damien Weston who was sixth in 35'27.
VAANE Track & Field Meeting - Monday 9th May 2011
Amanda Edwards and Steve Smith both won their 100m races. Amanda won the W35 race in 14.7 seconds and Steve won the M50 in 13.1. Graham Lee was third in the M35 race in 13.1.
Lambton 10k and 5k Runs - Sunday 8th May 2011
Michelle Holt won the Senior Womens race in 38'02 over the demanding 10k course. Hayley Reed was third. Tom Campion was second Over 50 in a time just inside 38 minutes. In the 5k race Steven Duffy finished third after his injury plagued season continued after falling over at the 2k point whilst in the lead when swerving to avoid geese on the course. Alan Hodgson had a steady run after still feeling tired from his run at the Kendal half marathon the previous week. Michelle and Hayley had both raced midweek at The Gordon Smith memorial relay races in Wallsend, where they were joined in the team by Susan Clughen. Michelle ran the second fastest time by a woman.
Hexham Track & Field Meeting - Sunday 24th April 2011
Hollie Lancaster won the 150m race in 19.80 seconds. Hollie was second in the 100m with 13.46 seconds.
Jack Martin pb in Salford 10 k
Jack Martin ran a new personal best over 10k at the Salford 10k race with his time of 30'50. Jack was fifth in the race. The time was a massive improvement of nearly two minutes over his previous best time of 32'47 at the Birchwood 10k last year.
Elswick Harriers Good Friday Races - Shildon - Friday 22nd April 2011
The veteran mens team won the event from Morpeth in 48'50. Paul Redman ran the first leg in 12'02. Ken Bell ran 12'15 on the second leg. Brian Bewick ran 12'02 on the third leg and Paul Collins ran 12'31 on the final leg. Paul and Brian had the joint second fastest time in the vets race over the 2.28 mile course. The vets B team finished fifth with Paul Merrison running 12'15, George Harden 12'41, Paul Cooper 12'43 and Len Christopher 14'38. The Senior team finished 10th with Mark Hood coming home second on the opening leg in 10'51. Fred Judson ran 14'35, Damien Weston ran 12'47 before Kevin Calvert completed the team on the final leg with 11'56.
In the womens race, Michelle Holt finished second in 12'53. Hayley Reed was fifth in 13'40 and Vicky Haswell was 21st in14'32
In the Under 15 Boys race Michael Wilson was 3rd in 12'21. Luca Irvine was 14th in 13'39 and Dominic Hill was 20th in 14'54. The team finished second.
Anne Marie Readshaw Open Track & Field Meeting - Shildon - Sunday 17th April 2011
There was a good turnout of Harriers at this early season meeting. In the 60m Boys, Owen Hackson ran 10.40 seconds. In the Under 13 Girls 100m, Laura Hand ran 15.50 seconds. Hollie Lancaster was second in the Under 15 Girls 100m in 13.10, with Amanda Jackson running 16.80. In the Senior Ladies 100m Samantha McKenzie ran 13.50 for 5th and Amanda Edwards ran 14.90. In the Under 13 Boys 100m Callum Todd ran 14.40 for fifth. In the Under 17 Boys 100m Anthony Barnes was also fifth in 12.00.
Over 200m, Laura Hand was joint 6th fastest with 31.40 in the Under 13 Girls race. Hollie Lancaster was fastest in the Under 15 Girls race with 26.80. In the Under 13 Boys Jack Smith ran 30.50 for fifth and Callum Todd ran 31.30 for 7th. In the 400m Under 17 Boys, Michael Wilson ran 54.30 for fourth. In the Under 11 Boys 600m Owen Jackson ran 2'05.5 for third. In the Under 13 Girls 800m Laura Hand ran 2'49.7 for 7th. In the Under 13 Boys 800m Jack Smith ran 2'43.4 for fifth and Joseph Gaffney ran 2'57.6. In the Under 15 Boys 800m Luca Irvine was narrowly beaten, finishing second in 2'12.3. In the Senior Mens 800m rcae, Jake Archer was fourth in 1'59.1 and Oliver James was 7th in 2'03.4.
In the Under 15 Girls Long Jump, Ella Barnes jumped 3.44m. In the Under 13 Boys Long Jump, Callum Todd won with a leap of 4.06m. In the Under 13 Boys Shot, Joseph Gaffney was second with 7.72m and Callum Todd was fourth with 6.53m
Virgin London Marathon
Well done to Jonathan Dobson, Paul Besford, Sean Smith, Steven Gordon and David Savage for completing the 2011 London Marathon. Jonathan ran just inside 2 hours 46 minutes for a new pb. Paul ran 2 hours 48 minutes. Sean was a minute inside 3 hours, Steven ran 3 hours 9 minutes witha negative split and David Savage ran 3 hours 47 minutes after going through halfway in 1 hour 41 minutes.
Wallsend Rising Sun 5 mile MT
Brian Bewick finished 3rd overall and first veteran at the Wallsend Rising Sun 5 mile race in a time of 27'59. Paul Collins was seventh overall and first Over 50 in 29'04. Ingrid Hope was 26th overall, second woman and first Over 50 in 33'27. Dawn Sheriff in her first competitive race for several years finished 57th in 43'52.
ERRA National 12 Stage Road Relays
In extremely warm conditions, at a very popular and busy Sutton Park, Sutton Coldfield, after a superb start by Patrick Martin, Sunderland eventually finished 30th team. Patrick finished third on the first stage in 26'10 which proved to be the sixth fastest long stage time of the day over the 5.39 mile loop. Jack Martin ran his long long stage in 27'26, Gavin Massingham ran 27'45, Mark Hood ran 29'00, Noel Hitchcock ran 31'58 and Paul Redman ran 31'10. On short stages of 2.995 mile Jake Archer ran 16'35, Damien Weston ran 17'22, Norman Younger ran 16'56, Jason Waite ran 17'48, George Harden ran 17'24 and Alan Hodgson 17'51.
Sand Dancer 10k
In warm conditions at South Shields, Dean Phillips finished 77th in 44'53 for the approximate 10k held on the Multi terrain course. Kathryn Watt was 112th in 48'05 and Susan Clughen was 157th in 53'39.
Blyth Transped 10k
In almost perfect conditions, Paul Besford finished 9th (third veteran) in 34'02. Alan Hodgson had an excellent run to finish 48th in a new 10k pb of 37'33, taking two and a half minutes of his previous best time. Ingrid Hope finished 110th (fifteenth women and 1st women over 50) in 40'51.
Start Fitness North East Harrier League - Prudhoe
The Under 15 Boys won the final race at Prudhoe, to win the overall trophy just ahead of Gosforth. The club were led home by Michael Wilson, who won the race, despite a 1'50 handicap from the fast pack. Michael's time for the demanding course was 12'41. James Myers finished 10th from the slow pack in 15'13, closely followed by James McAnaney in 12th (15'18). Hugh Danby Platt finished 14th from the fast pack in 13'40, with Luca Irvine 18th in 13'58. Team member, Dominic Hill was not available on the day.
In the Under 13 girls, Sophie Burnett finished 5th from the fast pack in 11'37 and in the Under 15 girls, Amy Coulson was also 5th from the fast pack in 15'02. Sophie was also fifth in the Grand Prix series with 25 points. Michelle Holt finished 22nd from the fast pack in the Senior Womens race in 21'20 (the fourth fastest time) with Hayley Reed finishing 40th with 22'16. Michelle finished fourth in the Grand Prix series on 27 points. The Under 13 Boys finished third team on the day with Jack Smith finishing third from the slow pack in 11'53. Ben Johnson was 10th in 12'12, Luke Phillips was 18th in 12'46, Samuel Quinn was 20th in 12'49 and Jack Robinson finished 29th from the fast pack with 11'36.
The Senior men were unable to defend their title on the day, due to a strong turnout by Heaton and Morpeth. Leading the club home was Paul Redman who finished 30th from the medium pack in 32'37. Alan Hodgson narrowly failed to finish in the top 50, losing out to several fast pack runners at the finish. Alan eventually finished 53rd in 35'44. David Savage continued his steady improvement finishing 147th in 38'00, Roy Baker was 160th in 38'50, Fred Judosn was 176th 39'19, Len Christopher was 207th in 40'35, Bill Bittlestone was 227th in 41'43 and Dean Phillips continued his transformation from Sunderland parkrunner to seasoned cross country campaigner finishing 249th in 43'13.
Northern Athletics Road Relays
After last minute changes and withdrawals, Sunderland still finished a creditable 14th at the Northern Road Relays held at Catterick Garrison on Sunday 20th March. Patrick Martin finished third on the first stage in 21'40 which proved to be the fourth fastest time of the day for the 4.6 mile course. Paul Redman, the day after winning a bronze medal in the North East Veterans Cross Country championships had a storming run to finish in 4th place on the second stage in 12'45 for the 2.35 mile lap. Jon Dobson had a steady run of 25'47, losing eleven places on the third stage. Rob Rush consolidated 15th place on the fourth stage with 13'21, before Mark Hood gained three places on the fifth stage with 23'22. George Harden ran 13'08 on the sixth stage to maintain 12th place, before Jack Martin gained another three places on the seventh stage with 22'32 (the joint 15th fastest time on a long stage). Tom Campion who was drafted into the team at the last minute had a good run on the eighth stage with 13'51 losing two places. Tim Field regained a place on the ninth stage with 24'46 and Damien Weston gained a further place on the tenth stage with his time of 12'26. The fastest short stage by a Sunderland Harrier. Steven Gordon who was changed on the day to run a long stage after injuries affected other team members lost four places on the last long stage with his time of 27'21 before Alan Hodgson recovered from the long wait and nerves to run a steady 13'51 on the final short stage, losing only one place in the process to a very fast run from Liverpool Pembroke.
North East Veterans Cross Country Championships
Despite a brave front running performance, Brian Bewick narrowly failed to win the Veterans Championships after Paul Waterston of Morpeth pulled away in the last half mile. Paul Redman after a steady start which saw him in 7th place at the end of the first lap, gradually worked his way through the field to pull away from Tom Brennan of North Shields Poly and former Sunderland member John Stephens of Low Fell to finish an excellent third. Ken Bell completed the scoring the Over 45 team in seventh place. Sunderland easily winning the Over 45 title, despite the absence of eight times champion, Brian Rushworth, who was unable to defend his title due to an achilles injury. In the Womens race, Ingrid Hope finished fifth overall but was a clear winner of the Over 50 category.
Dana Laws
Congratulations to Dana Laws who won the Under 13 Girls Grand Prix title for the Gateshead Winter Indoor Meetings. Dana won the High Jump at the last meeting held at Gateshead Stadium on Thursday 17th March 2011.
Trafford 10k
Patrick Martin finished fourth in a new pb for 10k of 29'42. An improvement of 11 seconds on his previous pb. Patrick was beaten in the race by fellow North East athletes Ricky Stephenson, New Marske, and Jonny Taylor, Morpeth. In the same race Ian Hudspith of Morpeth ran 30'16 to top the Over 40 mens rankings for the year. It would make for an interesting Blaydon race if they were all on the startline on 9th June.
British Masters National Cross Country Championships - Perry Barr, Birmingham
Sunderland Harriers won the M45-49 race, with leading runner, Brian Rushworth in 12th position in 27'48 and third M45. Tim Field continued his recovery from long term injury, finishing 29th in 28'38. Brian Bewick finished 41st in 29'11 and Paul Redman was the fourth counter finishing 59th in 29'53 for the 8k course.
Start Fitness North East Harrier League - Blaydon
Sunderland Harriers still have an outside chance of retaining the Senior Mens Harrier League title after a dominant display at Blaydon. With six finishers in the top 28 and 4 in the first 11, Sunderland were clear winners with a combined points score of 74. Exactly half of that of second counters Morpeth. Leading home for Sunderland was veteran Norman Younger, making a welcome return to the Harrier league after a long absence and finishing second from the slow pack. Another veteran, Ken Bell, finished third, before fast pack runner, Jack Martin, got up to fifth with the fastest time of the day. Three times North East Cross Country Champion, Mark Hood, finished eleventh from the fast pack, before medium pack runners, Jake Archer and Noel Hitchcock finished 25th and 28th respectively. In the Senior Womens race, Ingrid Hope won from the slow pack with Michelle Holt and Hayley Reed having good runs from the fast pack. Sunderland also provided the winner of the Under 17 Boys race in Oliver James, who ran quicker than the North East Xc champion.

Sunderland Harriers returned to winning ways with a narrow victory over Morpeth at the fourth Harrier Laegue fixture. Sunderland with five finishers in the first 20 had to wait a minute for Paul Redman to close the scoring in 49th position, after passing Morpeth's sixth counter on the last hill. Sunderland were led home by Paul Besford, in his first harrier league for the club, finishing fourth from the slow pack (37'27). Graham Lancaster finished 10th in 38'21, followed home in 11th by Paul Collins (38'27), making a welcome return to the Harrier league after several years absence. Steven Gordon had ane xcellent run to finish 16th in 38'53, before Steven Duffy finished 20th from the medium pack in 36'36. Medium pack man, Paul Redman, was the last counter in 49th (37'40). Quickest Harrier on the day was Brian Bewick who got up to 74th (fourth vastest veteran) from the fast pack in 35'55. The under 15 boys were clear winners of their race, with Dominic Hill winning from the slow pack in 12'29. Michael Wilson finished third from the fast pack with 11'22, overtaking teammate Luca Irvine in the finishing straight. Luca was fourth in 13'05. The final counter was Hugh Danby-Platt in 25th from the fast pack with 12'40. The Under 13 Boys finished 7th team with Kieran Watson 26th in 15'44, Luke Phillips 31st in 16'42 and Sam Quinn 32nd in 16'44. Michelle Holt was the only female from the club and finished 39th from the fast pack in 27'50.
Gavin Massingham
Gavin Massingham ran a very quick 15'07 at the Middlesbrough Albert Park parkrun on Saturday 26th February. This is the fastest time on the albert park course and also the fastest time ran by a Harrier at any parkrun, and demonstrates that Gavin is getting into good shape for the forthcoming relays. Now 15'07 on the hillier Sunderland parkrun course would be really impressive! As it is Gavin, must have spent most of the last lap of the 2.5 lap course course lapping people, which probably stopped a sub 15 minute time.
National Cross Country Championships
In what seems to have been a very muddy course, which the club chairman, Kevin Carr, describes as the hardest National Cross Country course he can remember, the club found themselves with only four athletes participating on the day. Sophie Burnett finished 107th in the Under 13 girls race, Amy Coulson finished 134th in the Under 15 girls race, Michael Wilson was 69th and Dominic Hill 244th in the Under 15 boys race. Due to the number of injuries reported to medical staff on the day there was changes to some of the distances of the longer events, to get the event back on schedule.
Signals Relays, Hetton Lyons Country Park, Saturday 12th February
The Veterans team won the Vets competition, finishing fourth overall in a time of 71'58, with Brian Rushworth posting the joint fastest time in the veterans race of 11'25. The Senior Mens team finished 10th overall in 75'00, with Mark Hood running 11'11 on the first leg. The Over 50 team finished 25th overall and second Over 50 team. Michelle Holt ran 13'08 for the 8th fastest ladies time.
Jarrow Indoor Meeting - Thursday 3rd February 2011
Sam McKenzie won the Under 20 Womens 60m race in 8.4 seconds. Alix Waites won the Under 17 Womens 600m race in 1'58.9.
Start Fitness North East Harrier League - Town Moor, Newcastle
Any chance the club had of winning the Harrier league title must surely have ended in Newcastle, when despite an excellent run from Noel Hitchcock to finish 8th from the slow pack the team could only finish 22nd on the day. Two members, David Savage and Dean Phillips, who only recently joined the club after starting off running at the Sunderland parkrun races both managed to count in the team competition for the first time. The other counters were team captain, Michael Hill, Len Christopher and Bill Bittlestone. The Boys team of Kieran Watson, Samuel Quinn and Luke Phillips, finished 5th team. Michelle Holt had an excellent run to finish 10th from the fast pack in the Women's race and Hayley Reed was 32nd from the fast pack. Michelle was the third fastest senior lady.
Northern Cross Country Championships
Patrick Martin was our top placed runner, finishing 5th in the Senior Mens race in 40'21. Michael Wilson, was 40th in the Under 15 Boys race, in which the team of Michael, Dominic Hill, Joel Jones, James Myers and Luca Irvine finished 9th. Sophie Burnett finished 43rd in the Under 13 girls race, Amy Coulson was 48th in the Under 15 girls race and Michelle Holt was 50th in the Senior Womens race. Jack Robinson was our top Under 13 runner in 77th place. Well done to all runners on what was a very muddy course!
Durham XC Relays
The Over 45 Veterans Team won with the Over 35 team finishing 5th (third over 35) and the Over 55 team 25th (third over 55). Brian Rushworth was the quickest Harrier with his time of 9'15 on the second leg of the vets race. Jake Archer ran 9'23 on the first leg of the senior mens race. The senior men eventually finishing 8th. Ingrid Hope was the fastest women over 50 with her time of 11'50. The Senior Women finished 5th team after Michelle Holt finished third on the first leg.

Sam McKenzie won the Under 20 Womens 60m race in 8.6 seconds. Alix Waites won the Under 17 Womens 600m race in 2'03.5.
North Eastern Counties AA Indoor Championships - Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th January 2011
Hollie Lancaster, the winner of the Under 13 Girls 60m race the previous year year, moved up an age group and finished second in the Under 15 Girls race in a new personal best time of 8.45 seconds after winning her heat in 8.61. Ella Barnes finished 9th in the Under 15 Girls Long Jump.
North Eastern Cross Country Championships - Saturday 8th January 2011
Sunderland had no individual medal winners at the championships. The under 15 Boys and Senior Men both won bronze medals in the team event. 10 time champion, Brian Rushworth was once again Sunderlands leading runner, eventually finishing 8th in the Senior mens event, despite suffering with a stomach problem. Michelle Holt finished 11th in the Senior Womens race. Dominic Hill, Hugh Danby-Platt and Luca Irvine were the counters in the Under 15 Boys race. All three had competed at the Sunderland schools cross country championship held the day before. In the Senior mens race the bronze medal team were Brian Rushworth, Tim Field (16th), Paul Merrison (32nd), Paul Redman (35th), Steven Gordon (60th) and Alan Hodgson (104th). The Under 20 mens team finished fourth, with Jake Archer 11th, Jason Waite 13th and Nathan Reed 14th. Amy Coulson was 13th in the Under 15 Girls race and Sophie Burnett was 9th in the Under 13 Girls race. Further results are on the XC page.
Saltwell Park Races
Michael Wilson was a clear winner of the Under 15 Boys race held at Saltwell Park on Saturday 18th December. Michael recently attended a training camp with Dame Kelly Holmes. This has nicely rounded off an excellent year for Michael during which he broke a longstanding club 800m record for Under 15 boys with a run of 2'01.02 and also finished third in the English Schools Championships.
Brampton to Carlisle 10 mile Road Race and Sunderland Parkrun
Steven Potts finished 12th in 54'35. Paul Redman was 26th (4th Over 45) in 58'12 and Roy Baker was 173rd in 68'41. Paul's time improved his PB for 10 mile by nearly a minute from his previous best of 59'09. At the Sunderland parkrun, Under 15 girl, Amy Coulson was a clear winner of the ladies race in a time of 23'00.
Gateshead Indoor Meeting 1 - Thursday 18th November 2010
Dana Laws won the Under 13 Girls Shot Putt with 6.16m and was 4th in the 60m race in 9.45 seconds. Anthony Barnes was second in the Under 17 Boys 60m in 7.82 seconds.
Heaton Memorial Road Race
The junior athletes led by example at the Heaton road races. In the Under 13 Girls Sophie Burnett finished 3rd in 12'39. In the Under 15 Girls Chelsea Gill finished 6th in 12'05. In the Under 11's race Owen Jackson finished 7th in 4'14, with Laura Hand 11th in 4'20. In the Senior Men's race, Steven Duffy finished 11th in 35'02. New member, Alan Hodgson, (V40) was 97th in 41'07 and Jimmy Wightman (V60) was 176th in 44'04.
English Cross Country Relays
The under 15 boys finished 26th at Mansfield. Michael Wilson finished 9th on the first leg with 6'41. After the second leg ran by Hugh Danby Platt in 7'25 the club were back in 31st place, before Dominic Hill regained 5 places on the final leg with 7'10.
